Kolkata Metro Brief
Kolkata Metro, being India’s one of the oldest mass
rapid transportation system which is found to be serving the city of Kolkata
since 24th October, 1984.
It was at first planned in the 1920s
whereas; its construction took place in the 1970s. Moreover, it is a project
which was bought into existence by the Ministry of Railways, Government of
India. The basic concept of it specifies that it is just like any other train
but running either in underground or elevated railway tracks. Back to the era
of its invention, Richard Trevithick is known as the actual initiator of the
Metro train; yet, we can also see that a specific recognition is being provided
to George Stephenson for his great role in the invention of Trains. In this
genre the Project Type deals with the Mass Rapid Transit System
which is also known as MRTS.
Since after independence, there was a
vehicle issue in Kolkata which further drew the attention of the city
organizers. Thereafter, soon Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy, the then Chief Minister of
West Bengal, initially measured in 1949, the thought of building an Underground
Railway for Kolkata in order to seize the arising issues. Endeavours to acquire
the issue by enlarging the existing armada of open transport vehicles barely
helped, since the streets represented just 4.2% of the surface territory in
Calcutta (now Kolkata). In the beginning phase of the Kolkata Metro, its
developmental tasks had to battle with a number of issues relating to lack of
assets, a distressing to underground utilities, court orders, etc. Regardless
of the diverse challenges, the administration started on 24th October,
1984, with the charging of a partial administration business covering a
separate zone of 3.40 km with five stations served in the middle of Esplanade
and Bhowanipur (currently known as Netaji Bhawan).
Soon with the flow of time, in 2010, the
Railway Ministry finally declared about the schedule for the development of the
five new metro lines and along with all its planning and management. (History of
Kolkata Metro Rail Corporation- KMRC) However,
at present it has two active lines i.e. a 27.22 km (16.91 mi) line from Noapara
to Kavi Subhash and a 5.8 km (3.6 mi) line from Salt Lake Sector V to Salt Lake
Stadium, for a total of 33.02 km (20.52 mi), apart from these two lines there
are also certain other divisions in the route of line. Unlike with the fact, the
other remaining portion of it has been provided with a definite specification
in a form of number lining one by one. For example:
· Line
2 which is the East-West Corridor, it connects from JBS to Falaknuma via MG
Bus Station by covering the route with a length of around 16.72 km.
· Line
3, connecting from Joka to Esplanade, with the route length of 16.72km by
covering 14 stations in total, where 9 of it are elevated and underground-5.
· Line
4, connecting from Noapara to Barasat with the route length of 16.215
km. Here, it is found to be covering 10 stations in the mid of its entire span
of journey, where 5 of the stations are elevated while 5 lies underground.
· Line
5, connecting from Baranagar to Barackpore, with the route length of 12.40
km, covering 11 stations in all.
· Lastly, Line
6 which is the Airport Metro, it connects from Kavi Subhash to Biman Bandar
with route length of 29.87 km, covering 24 stations in all.
A small sketch of 4km between Noapara
and Dakshineshwar was expected to be finished by the end of 2019 for
which shifting of premier fish markets which was positioned in VIP Bazar for
the construction of a new metro station was a chief attainment by the RVNL.
According the said statement by Suresh Prabhu, last year he announced
regarding the commencement of wok on the underground section from Airport
to Jessore Road Station. Providing its excellent track record, the
RVNL assumed with a fact of increase in the Kolkata Metro network to 122 km by
this year i.e. 2020.
Hence, with an analysis of the above
dealt facts it can be concluded in a brief that there is no doubt that at the
time when Kolkata’s urban transport problems were reaching to a much complex
situation, the audacious decision to have a Metro in the city has made a big
difference, and by now in today’s current scenario, Metro has the total
potential to induce and guide the development in the urban areas. Therefore,
this mode of MRT will be the most ideal mode of transportation for the upcoming
generation, as that will give rise in the craze of metro and will outshine all
other modes of conveyance, may be after many years.
Detailed:
The entire stretch of the East-West Metro
corridor, from Sector 5 to Howrah Maidan, is likely to be completed in two
years, provided bottlenecks affecting the route are cleared through local
support," Piyush Goyal, Railway minister. As recently in Feb. 2020 Kolkata metro
has got its second corridor which has helped the people to have a better
connectivity with less time lapse in the busy traffic of the city. If any of us
might went to Kolkata and he is stuck in the road traffic of the city they
might have got a ray of hope to not experience that pain in atleast some part
of the beautiful city. Is the problem which is faced in this city can be
answered by this network, this answer can be found from the people of that
place bit what we can do it is to take an overview of a network which can be a
possible solution of this giant problem.
Kolkata,
commonly “Calcutta”, also known as “city of Joy” has a very diverse culture and
ethnicity. Being one of the oldest city of India, was also a capital of India
once in British rule. Having a population of 14.3 million (world population
review) in 2020 and hence having a population density of 24,000 which is one of
the highest in the world. This metropolitan had the honor of having the first
planned and indigenously developed and operationalised rapid transit system in
India. When we see the extend of Kolkatta Metro we can find it from Noapara near Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose
Airport, Kolkata to Kavi Subhash Metro station near Garia, on the busy
North-South axis of Kolkata over a length of 27.226 Kms. with 24 Stations &
15.70 Kms. of underground section.
Starting from
the basics, the plan to have a metro in Kolkata started in early 1920, too
early right! After Independence the project started with a survey in 1950 under
the leadership of Mr. Bidhan Chandra Roy, the then chief minister of west
Bengal. The first survey didn’t have any results, but a need to reframe the
transport network in this old city came into light. In 1969, a metropolitan
Transport Network was setup which gave a plan to setup this metro network in 1971
for construction. These were namely, Dum Dum-Tollyguage, Salt Lake City-Ramrajatala
and Dakshineswar – Thakurpukur. With a proper plan in place the project was
inaugurated by then Prime Minister of India, Indira Gandhi on 29th Dec.
1972. With many problems in path, a section of it started in Oct. 24,1984
covering a distance of 3.4km with five stations were connected in series.
Kolkata Metro Rail network
Since then
tremendous improvement is been seen in the Kolkata metro rail network. Kolkata
metro made in collaboration with 50-50 share between Govt. of West Bengal and
Govt. of India has many of its portions under construction. After becoming the
17th zone in Indian Railways it further gains more importance.
When one travel in this metro one can find the state of the art infrastructure.
This fully operated between 6:45 am to 9:55 pm with an average speed of
55-60kmph. With such a huge population the scaling up of metro is done and
hence the fare of operation is varies from Rs 5 to Rs 30/-
Introducing
RFIDs to making metro more compatible for the users, railways introduced many
changes in it. It was never a case that Kolkata metro was not in criticism. E.
Sreedharan, the founder of Delhi metro said that a lot of misplanning is being
done in this project at the beginning and now should be handled by private
players who would be able to make it more profitable and hence give a better
experience to the passengers as Indian railways lack experience in handling
these metros.
The city of
palaces is always beautiful once it improves the experience of the visitors who
are on their way to explore the place. So hopefully we can find an alternative
to the busy roads in the form of metro all over Kolkata and eventually explore
more out of this place.
Untill then…
Have a great day!
